Harriet Miers Withdraws!

Maybe I'm being overly cynical but this seems like a tactical ploy to try and divert attention away from the Fitzgerald findings/indictments coming out tomorrow. The question is, will it work?

I don't think it did - at least in Washington, most of us followed the indictments pretty closely & even watched the press conference!

Not to mention now we have a new nomination which will definitely be a fight in the Senate...

While I don't think it would have been possible to completely deflect attention away from the indictments, the fact that on Monday everyone seemed to be talking about Alito suggests that it did have some success.

Apart from that, the Alito pick looks pretty secure and I think that the dems are going to have a tough time knocking him off.

Also, unless something comes up I think it would set a negative prcedent if they were to fillibuster although I wouldn't rule that out for more extreme nominees.
